Indigenous student leader picked up by army men lands in jail
The Panchhari upazila unit President Jewel Chakma of Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) was sent to jail on Monday. The development took place as Khagrachhari's Assistant Judicial Magistrate Rokeya Begum denied his bail plea in the afternoon after the army and the police jointly filed a case against him earlier in the day, said court sources. Panchhari police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jabbar on Sunday confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that some army personnel picked up Jewel the night before and later conducted drives in different areas with him.

Sources at the police station said that Jewel had been handed over to them around 6:15pm on Sunday. Before the latest case, Jewel had been sued twice with the police station over extortion charges, in which he is already on bail. Jewel was detained from the house of one of his relatives in Panchhari upazila in possession of some receipt books to raise fund for the organisation and some letters drafted to send to some individuals, said PCP's Khagrachhari district unit Office Secretary Samar Chakma.

The detention came amid continuing protests over the death of Romel Chakma, PCP’s Naniarchar unit general secretary in Rangamati, on April 19. Romel, an HSC examinee, was also picked up by the army personnel of Naniarchar camp on April 5 reportedly for interrogation in two arson cases on suspicion. He was handed over to the police the next morning and later admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
