A boat loaded with 18 tonnes of rice for the flood-hit people of Sunamganj's Rongarchar union parishad has capsized in the Surma River after being hit by a nor'wester.
The boat overturned while being loaded with VGF rice in Mollikpur and scheduled to depart for Rongarchar union where 720 families had been hit hard by the recent flood.
Locals rescued the boatmen and the crew.
Rongarchar Union Chairman Md Abdul Hye said the boat had 360 sacks of rice when it sank. “We have another 18 tonnes of rice for the flood-affected people,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.
Meanwhile, the storm damaged at least 2,000 houses in nine union parishads in the sadar upazila on Sunday night.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Israt Jahan said people affected by the storm will get assistance.
Vast swathes of the country's northeast went under water after torrential rain triggered flash floods, dealing a heavy blow to Boro farmers who were just days away from harvesting their crops.
Sunamganj, Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Netrakona and Brahmanbaria districts have affected the most.
The prime minister visited the flood-hit Haor areas of Sunamganj on Sunday and distributed relief goods among the affected people
