Debt-ridden UP chairman commits suicide
A Union Parishad chairman in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj has reportedly committed suicide failing to pay debts. Family members claimed that they had found Shakti Mirza, 42, chairman of Lahiri Mohonpur Union, hanging with a rope from the ceiling fan of his room Sunday morning. Shakti was the son of former deputy speaker Abdul Latif Mirza. Sirajganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin said that the UP chairman had many debts. Shakti had an altercation with his wife and relatives at his residence in the morning. At one point, he went to his room, locked the door and hung himself from the ceiling fan. The neighbours took him to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 10:30am.
