Fresh spell of rainfall over the last few days has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Khowai River, worsening the flood condition in Habiganj.
Heavy rainfall and onrush of water from upstream hilly areas have already flooded some 35,000 hectares of paddy fields in the low-lying areas of the district.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), water of the Khowai River was flowing 70cm above the danger level on Sunday.
Water had by this time spilled over the riverbank in many places and flooded huge extent of paddy fields, reported locals.
BWDB Executive Engineer Md Tahidul Islam said they had advised the people of the riverbank areas to remain alert.
