At least 11 people were hit by bullets during a clash between two groups of Awami League supporters in Jazira of Shariatpur Saturday morning over establishing supremacy in the area.
One of the injured was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical state while the others to Jazira Upazila Health Complex.
Police and locals blame Mithun Dhali, general secretary of Dhaka’s Tejgaon College who hails from Mulna of Jazira, and his men for using firearms.
Jazira police Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam confirmed the incident.
Dhali’s gang swooped on the supporters of former chairman of Joynagar Union Parishad Aminul Islam Mintu Kazi at Ganganagar Bazar in the morning.
Mintu is the follower of local lawmaker BM Mozammel Huq while Dhali is a close associate of Awami League central committee member Iqbal Hossain Opu.
Injured Raju Ahmed Kazi alleged that Dhali and his men had launched the attack after they locked in an altercation over visiting the marketplace.
Mintu claimed that Dhali had tortured and intimidated his supporters during the Union Parishad elections. “He does not allow my supporters to go to local marketplaces,” the former UP chairman said.
Dhali admitted that he had a licensed shotgun, and said: “But I did not use it today. I do not know who opened fire during the clash.”
He blamed Mintu Kazi for establishing a reign of terror in the area with the help of his men.
“They regularly threaten the businessmen at Ganganagar Bazar. Local people resisted them when they came to the place today,” the Chhatra League leader claimed.
