A mighty nor’wester storm damaged at least 1,000 houses in Sunamganj on Saturday night.
The residents of Sunamganj Sadar upazila, Bishwamvarpur upazila, Chhatak upazila, Derai upazila, Dharamapasha upazila, Dowarabazar upazila, Jagannathpur upazila and Tahirpur upazila were affected by the storm which started around 9pm.
Ayful Bibi, a resident of Santipur, said: “I lost all my crops in the flood and now the storm has taken away my house. It [the house] is entirely destroyed now. How will I survive?”
“The storm damaged my house badly and now I am living here in misery,” said Imam Ali, another victim.
Sreenathpur Government Primary School has also been damaged by the storm. The school authorities suspended all academic activities after the storm hit the school.
Afiya Akter, principal of the school, said: “The storm destroyed the school building, books, furniture and art works. The 450 students of the school will be affected due to this.”
Meanwhile, the chairmen of Dowarabazar upazila parishad and Sunamganj zila parishad have promised to provide the victims with all types of support from the administration.
