Schoolteachers want their demands implemented

Teachers of secondary schools under monthly pay order (MPO) system across the country went on work abstention on Tuesday to press home their several demands. As part of their protest, the teachers wore black badges at respective workplaces and joined the strike from 10am. The teachers during the strike held rallies where they threatened of tougher programmes if the demands are not fulfilled in no time. In many places, schoolteachers announced that they would observe token hunger strike if the situation remains unchanged. Calling upon the prime, finance and education ministers to address their problems, the teachers also vowed to continue their movement until the demands are met. The demands are nationalisation of schools, implementation of the National Education Policy-2010, 5% annual increment, allowances for Pohela Boishakh, payment of house rent, complete festival and treatment allowances, MPO enlistment of non-MPO institutions, payment from welfare trust and retirement benefits six months after retirement, and allocation for education sector amounting to 6% of GDP. Our correspondents from Manikganj, Satkhira, Laxmipur and Bagerhat reported the strike being observed with human chains formed in many districts as well.
