The distribution of machine-readable smart national identity (NID) cards is set to begin in Rajshahi first and then in Barisal over the month of April.
Election Commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam will inaugurate the start of distribution programme in Rajshahi at 10 am on April 2, while Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder will similarly kick off the distribution programme in Barisal on April 15, said the EC secretariat secretary as quoted by BSS.

The inauguration in Rajshahi shall be held at the Shilpokola Academy in the district, the secretary added.
The introduction of smart NID cards is a part of government efforts to clamp down on its forgery. The machine-readable cards contain an encrypted microchip that stores information on the holder, and are in accordance with 25 international certifications and standards.
The smartcards will allow cardholders to avail 22 types of services that include banking, TIN, driver’s license and passport.
