Police have arrested two Union Parishad members in a case filed over torturing two teenagers after tying them to a tree in Rajshahi’s Durgapur upazila.
The arrestees are Durgapur’s Jhaluka Union Parishad members Abdul Motaleb and Abdul Latif Mirza.
Ruhul Alam, OC of Durgapur police, said that they had arrested the duo after Ziaur Rahman – father of one of the victims Rizvi Hossain Zarzis – filed a case accusing seven persons Thursday morning.
Police were trying to arrest the other accused including UP Chairman Mojahar Ali Mondol, the key accused in the case, the OC added.
Earlier, the two teenagers – Zarzis and Ratan Ali – were admitted to Durgapur Health Complex. Both of them are class X students of Durgapur’s Amgachi Shahar Banu High School.
Rizvi’s father Ziaur told the Dhaka Tribune that the two kids had been beaten up indiscriminately on the charge of stealing a goat.
“Kids may make mistakes. But punishing them by tying to a tree does not comply with the law,” he said, adding that the stolen goat along with Tk16,000 as penalty had already been returned to the goat’s owner.

Abdul Motaleb, before his arrest, claimed that the two kids had stolen the goat from local resident Rezaul’s house on Tuesday night. “They were taking the goat towards Motihar Bazar of Rajshahi city.
“Local night guards detained them early Wednesday on suspicion and contacted me after verifying their whereabouts.”
“I rescued the boys from their custody and brought them back to the village around 6am on Thursday,” Motaleb added.
Then they were tortured brutally during the shalish (local arbitration) as they confessed to their crime. Later, they were handed over to their families.
Mojahar Ali Mondol, Abdul Motaleb and Mirza Abdul Latif were present among others during the arbitration.
Earlier, a minor was tortured after tying to a truck on the charge of stealing a CD-player from a bus at Khan Filling Station in Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila on February 21.
