The press briefing at the Comilla DC office was also attended by Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
Journalist Gaziul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Comilla DC office had organised a dialogue session over the upcoming upazila parishad election on Friday morning and journalists were invited at the programme by the district election office.”
“But the deputy commissioner (DC) had ended the programme soon after the introductory session.”
Senior vice-president of Comilla Press Club Jahangir Alam Ratan said: “The DC asked the journalist to leave the meeting room soon after the introductory session without discussing anything about the election.”
“We are suspicious over his secret meeting only with the two candidates.”
“The DC has humiliated the journalists. We have been thinking about boycotting covering DC office’s news,” Ratan added.
Journalists Ashok Kumar Barua, Enamul hoque Faruk and Bahar Rayhan also spoke during the protest, among others.
Later, Additional Deputy Commisioner Moniruzzaman Talukder said the DC had asked as per the command of election commission office.
Journalists were supposed to be briefed after the meeting, he added.
