Headmasters of 70 government primary schools of Bogra’s Dupchachia upazila were absent from their respective workplaces on Saturday.
A murmur went through the local residents due to such mass absence of the headmasters in the schools.
However, upazila primary education officer Emdadul Hoque told the Dhaka Tribune: “The figure is not 70. Some 42-43 headmasters have gone for a picnic at Rabindranath’s Kuthibari in Kushtia taking their leaves in advance.”
“Academic activities in the schools were not hampered due to their absence,” Emdadul added.
But a inquiry revealed that the authorities of 70 schools out of 85 in the upazila had run their operation without the headmasters on Saturday.
District primary education officer Hossain Ali said teachers were allowed to avail a certain number of day offs in a year.
But such a large number of headmasters taking their day offs in a body were not lawful, he added.
The matter would be investigated, Ali said.
