Farmer commits suicide failing to repay loans
Shajahan, 40, of Porabari village in Sharsha upaizla, took the poison around 9pm on Tuesday night. The relatives whisked him off to Upazila Health Complex around 10pm, and later to Jessore General Hospital. He was declared dead around 4am on Wednesday, confirmed Prianka Dash, an intern doctor of the hospital. The deceased’s brother Alauddin claimed that Shajahan and his wife had been under constant pressure from the NGO workers for their loans including a loan of Tk30,000 from Jagarani Chakra Foundation, Tk45,000 from Asa, Tk30,000 from Brac and Tk 50,000 from TMSS. Shajahan's wife Moselma Begum said that Brac officials visited the house on Monday and insulted the man for repeatedly failing to repay their weekly installments. Sheikh Ibrahim Hossain, Brac’s Jhikargachha area manager, admitted that Shajahan’s wife had taken Tk30,000 from the organisaiton last month, but had not repaid any of the installments since then. The couple was scheduled to deposit an installment on February 26, he added. Brac’s Jessore Regional Manager Asafur Rahman told reporters that their field workers had no record of misconduct with the loan takers.
