At least eight people have been killed and 15 others sustained injuries as a truck rammed into a crowd attending a funeral programme at Alutilla Buddha Bihar in Khagrachhari, reports our correspondent.
Seven of them died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in the afternoon.
Of the injured, condition of two were stated critical.
The Buddhist community people gathered at the monastery for a funeral around 10:30am when the truck ploughed through the crowd, according to Matiranga police OC Shahadat Hossain Titu.
Police detained the driver and seized the truck.
The injured were first taken to Matiranga Upazila Health Complex and the sadar hospital. Later two of them were sent to the CMCH as their condition deteriorated. One of them, Boby Marma, 15, died around 4:30pm.
Twelve injured persons were shifted to the Sadar hospital from Matiranga Upazila Health Complex. Another critically injured person was sent to the CMCH for better treatment, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent reports, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was killed yesterday morning when a truck hit his motorcycle in the district’s Monirumpur-Dhakuria highway.
The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossen, 35, son of Intaj Ali Sardar of Joypur village of Monirumpur Upazila in the district.
The ASI was attached with Ranishakail police station of the district.
He joined the service in 2004.
Family sources told the Dhaka Tribune that the incident took place Friday morning when a brick laden truck slammed into Jakir’s motorcycle.
He died while being rushed to the nearest hospital, Mahmudul Hasan, doctor at Monirumpur Upazila Health Complex, confirmed.
Monirumpur police station SI Tapash said: “Jakir’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.”
Our Sherpur correspondent reports, at least two people were killed and five others injured while a picnic bus hit a pick-up van from rear at Jhinaigati upazila in the district yesterday morning.
The deceased are Saiful, 13 and his cousin Abu Hamza, 13 from Sribordi upazila.
According to the witnesses, a pick-up van – carrying 20 madrasa students – was heading to Jhinaigati’s Gajni Recreation Centre from Sribordi.
When the van reached Jhinaigati’s Ahmednagar, a picnic bus hit the van from rear. Two students of class six died on the spot and five others got injured, the witnesses said.
Injured students were rushed to Sherpur district hospital, they added.
Acting Officer-in-Charge of Jhinaigati police station Mizanur Rahman confirming the incident said the bus had been seized while the driver managed to flee.
Our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports, three people have been burnt to death and seven others injured, as the gas cylinder of their microbus exploded after colliding with a bus in the Harbang area under Chakaria of Cox’s Bazar district.
The deceased are Mafia Begum, 45, Yamin, 6, and microbus driver Mohammad Arif, 35.
Chakaria Chiringga highway police SI Mizanur Rahman said the Cox’s Bazar-bound microbus collided head-on with a Chittagong-bound bus and caught fire, as its gas cylinder exploded around Friday midnight, killing three people on the spot.
He said the injured were rushed to Chakaria Health Complex and Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The bus driver fled the scene.
