11 killed by lightning in 9 districts
Eleven more people were killed by lightning strikes in Chittagong, Gaibandha, Joypurhat, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Rajbari, Chandpur, Jessore and Dhaka districts as thunderstorms swept the districts yesterday. In Gaibandha, a streak of lightning struck Sirajul Islam, 60, of Malibari Purbopara village of Sadar upazila, as he was working on a cropland during thunderstorm around 11am. He died on his way to a local hospital, said Malibari UP Chairman Najmul Huda. In Chittagong, a man named Amzad Ali, 50, was killed by lightning in Kathtoli area under Pahartoli police station in the city in the morning. In Joypurhat, Manik, 28, a farmer from Ghugoil village in Khetlal upazila, was killed as a thunderbolt struck him while he was working on a paddy field in Hawar beel area around 10:30am. Another farmer named Rafiqul Islam, 35, from Dhekerpar village of Nageshwar upazila in Kurigram, was killed by a thunderbolt at Sotoghata village in Sadar upazila in the morning. In Habiganj, Nurul Islam, 55, was killed as a thunderbolt hit him in Rema tea garden area of Chunarughat upazila around 12pm. In Rajbari, a lightning strike left Sobhan Sarder, 50, a resident of Ujanchar union of Goalondo upazila, dead around 2:45pm. Meanwhile Jasmine Nahar, 25, her one-and-half-year-old child Apon, and Priya, 18, were injured in the incident. In Sunamganj, Amir Uddin, 30, from Kamarkhal village of Jagannathpur upazila, was killed as a thunderbolt hit him around 12pm. In Chandpur, a day-labourer was killed and two others were injured as a thunderbolt hit them on a trawler in the Meghna River of Sadar upazila around 2pm. The deceased was identified as Nabir Hossain, 25, from Charpolkon village of Kamalnagar upazila in Lakshmipur district, while the injured were Osman, 50, and Rakib, 24. Two women -- Beauty Akhter and Tonni Begum -- were injured by a lightning strike in Paschim Banchanagar Koroitola area in Lakshmipur Sadar in the afternoon. In Dhaka, Mantu Miah, 19, a Class-X student, by a thunderbolt while playing football in a field in Savar in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Monir Hossain, 13, a Class-V student, was killed by lightning in Basta Noyachar area of Dhamrai upazila. In Jessore, Year Ali, 70, suffered injuries after a thunderbolt struck him at Sujolpur village in Sadar upazila in the afternoon. He was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.
