Update : 20 Apr 2018, 10:11 PM
The general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Chattogram city chapter, Nurul Azim Rony, has stepped down from his post after a video footage of him beating up a coaching centre director went viral on social media platforms, including Facebook. The footage that went viral on Thursday was recorded on February 17. The six-minute video shows that Rashed Mia, director of UniAid coaching centre, was sitting at his office at GEC branch. Upon entering the office, Rony flew into a rage and at one stage began to pull the victim’s hair. Later, the Chhatra League leader started beating him up. The footage shows that Rony slapped on the face of Rashed for 13 times. Allegations were also raised against the BCL leader that he demanded Tk20 lakh as extortion from Rashed. Rashed lodged a General Diary (GD) with the city’s Panchlaish police station against seven to eight people, including Rony. As per the GD, the Chhatra League leader used to come to the coaching centre very often. On February 17, Rony allegedly demanded Tk20 lakh as extortion from the coaching centre director. He also threatened the complainant with dire consequences if he did not comply with the demand. Later on April 13, Rony along with another Chhatra League leader Noman Chowdhury beat him up again in the city’s Mohammadpur area. Noman also went to the complainant’s house and took away Tk 35,000 and passports of Rashed and his wife. He threatened to kill Rashed if the rest of the money was not given. Screenshot of a CCTV footage which showed Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Chattogram city chapter, Nurul Azim Rony, is manhandling Rashed Mia, director of Uniaid Coaching Centre, at the latter's office at the city's GEC area branch Despite repeated attempts, Rony could not be reached on his mobile phone for comment in this regard. However, the student leader issued a statement. In the statement, the BCL leader claimed that Rashed Mia and he had been running the coaching centre for long. “Rashed used to look after financial matters of the business. I found some irregularities on several occasions but overlooked it for the sake of friendship. On one occasion, he (Rashed) took Tk9.50 lakh as loan from me in two cheques. I said nothing although he did not repay the loan after one year,” said Rony in the statement. “On February 16, I entered the coaching centre and saw that a person was taking class of school students on the ground floor. I asked Rashed over phone why the academic activities were going on during the SSC examinations. “The next day, Rashed came to the coaching centre and told me a room of the coaching centre was rented out to a teacher. “I locked into an altercation with him as to why a room was rented out without informing me. Both of us got furious and something untoward did happen at that time, but we resolved the matter on the same day,” added Rony in the statement. Mohiuddin Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish police station, said they received a complaint over demanding Tk20 lakh as extortion. “We are looking into the complaint. We will take the complaint as a case if it is found to be true,” added the OC. On April 4, Chattogram Biggyan College Principal Md Jahed Khan lodged a case with the city’s Chawkbazar police station against seven Chhatra League men, including Rony. The principal alleged that Rony demanded Tk20 lakh as extortion from him. Meanwhile, Rony sent a letter to the president and secretary of the central unit of Chhatra League notifying them of his resignation. Rony also uploaded a copy of the letter on his Facebook page. In the letter, he said that he resigned from the post of general secretary. “Senior joint general secretary Zakaria Dastagir will replace me as the acting general secretary of the organization. I request the central leadership of the organization to take necessary steps in this regard,” said Rony in the letter. However, the Dhaka Tribune could not independently confirm whether the Chhatra League central unit accepted his resignation as neither the president nor the general secretary could be reached over phone.
