At least four Bangladeshi nationals have been killed and around 100 more, including 21 members of the Bangladesh Navy,  have been injured in two massive explosions that rocked the port of Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Inter Service Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) confirmed at least 21 members of Bangladesh Navy hade been injured in the two explosions on Tuesday.

All of them were on duty at BNS Bijoy of Bangladesh Navy under the Maritime Task Force deployed as part of United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Beirut, confirmed the statement.

Meanwhile, UNIFIL on its website said one of its ships of the Maritime Task Force, which was anchored at Beirut Port during the time of the explosion was damaged, leaving some UNIFIL naval peacekeepers injured – some of them seriously.

UNIFIL transported the injured peacekeepers to the nearest hospitals for medical treatment.

UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Del Col said: “We are with the people and the Government of Lebanon during this difficult time and stand ready to help and provide any assistance and support.”

UNIFIL is currently assessing the situation, including the scale of the impact on UNIFIL personnel, it said.

Bangladesh Navy is taking part in UNIFIL since May 10 as part of peacekeeping mission.

The Bangladesh Embassy is doing all it can to help the injured Bangladeshis and the community as a whole, Bangladeshi Ambassador to Lebanon Maj Gen Md Jahangir Al Mustahidur Rahman has said.

In a video message, he said that the situation in Lebanon was now gloomy and like the Lebanese, Bangladeshis are also worried.

"The prime minister is receiving regular updates on the situation. The foreign minister and expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister are also in touch with the mission," he added.
