The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2018 was observed in a befitting manner in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the globe on Tuesday.

This year’s theme was “70 Years of Service and Sacrifice.”

The day offers a chance to pay tribute to the contributions of uniformed and civilian personnel to the work of the organization, and to honour more than 3,700 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948, including 129 who died last year.

Various programs were held to observe the day, according to Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR).

The day’s programs began with the "Peacekeepers Run" in the morning, where Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali attended as chief guest.

The Armed Forces Division and the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Bangladesh jointly organized a reception program at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka in honour of the relatives of the deceased and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers.

President Md Abdul Hamid attended the function as the chief guest. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam was also present.

A special documentary on different activities of Bangladeshi soldiers in the UN peacekeeping missions was screened at the function, which was telecast live by state-run channels BTV and BTV World.

President Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day and greeted all members of the UN peacekeeping missions including Bangladeshi ones.
