She made the comments on Tuesday at a roundtable marking International Women’s Day at Bhorer Kagoj office in Dhaka.
Claiming that the government is women and child friendly, she said they will not pass a law that harms either of them.
The state minister said using the special provision would need to meet certain criteria such as marriage of a minor would need the consent and permission of the court on a contextual case by case basis.
“We will increase the jail time for anyone found violating or abusing this law and also suspend the any marriage officiator found guilty of conducting illegal child marriages,” the state minister added.
State Minister Chumki and Editor of Bhorer Kagoj Shamol Datta handed over honorary crest to language movement activist Rawshan Ara Bachchu, who first broke the barricade of Pakistani occupation in 1952.
Freedom fighter and women’s rights activist Rokeya Kabir, and Additional Inspector General of Police Fatema Begum were also honoured for their contribution to the nation.
Director General of Family Planning Association of Bangladesh Dr Halida Hanum Akhter, Vice-President of BNP Selima Rahman, and Executive Director of Prip Trust Aroma Dutta, spoke at the event.
