A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order, reports BSS.
"The bench asked for case documents from the lower court and ordered the jail authorities to produce the detainees on December 4," said lawyer Cumar Debul Dey, who brought the matter to the court's notice.
Chan Miah, Makbul Hossain, Sentu Kamal and Billal Hossain have been languishing in Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur for 18, 17, 16 and 15 years without trial.
Recently, a private TV channel aired several investigative reports on the plights of the inmates.
On November 8, the High Court granted bail to a man named Shipon detained for 16 years without any trial.
Acknowledging the issue as “shameful” for the state and the judiciary, the court also asked the Dhaka deputy commissioner and the district social welfare officer to assist in rehabilitating Shipon, if he seeks it.
The Supreme Court’s legal aid office recently issued letters asking the prison authorities to give the lists of inmates who have been kept behind the bars for over five years without any trial.
The Kashimpur jail authorities have already sent a list of 56 such detainees to the office of the Inspector General of Prisons.
