Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that the government will not tolerate the misappropriation of relief materials, stressing that those who are involved in irregularities in this regard would face action irrespective of their political affiliation.

“We are taking proper action, and will do so, against those who are engaged in it [misappropriation], no matter which party they belong to, even if my one,” she said while receiving donations for the PM’s Relief Fund via video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka.

The government will not tolerate any form of misappropriation of relief materials meant for the poor. Strong action would be taken against those involved in irregularities, UNB reported citing the prime minister.

More than 30 government agencies, public and private organizations, and a lawmaker came forward with the donation for the PM’s Relief and Welfare Fund to help fight the coronavirus, said Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

Representatives of these organizations handed over donation cheques to PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The prime minister said that the government is taking steps to see that the relief materials reach every person.

If there is any problem over the relief distribution, the government is taking legal actions immediately, she said, adding that several problems have been identified in this regard – perhaps at five to seven places, and not in too many in the entire country.

Coming down heavily on the critics of the government over the relief distribution, the premier said some people and parties have said many things but did not turn up to help people.

“They are busy criticizing and blaming but not helping anyone. They are not even giving a penny or standing beside people,” she said adding that instead they are vocal over the problem in just five to six places although the government is distributing relief materials smoothly in thousands of places across the country.

The prime minister expressed sincere gratitude to the donors for coming up with assistance to help the poor and extended greetings of Bangla New Year.

The government agencies that came up with the donations are the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Local Government Division, Rural Development, and Co-operatives Division, and Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Limited (DMRTCL).

The educational institutions that donated to the PM’s Relief Fund are Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University, and Siddheswari Girls' High School.

The other organizations that made donations are Bangladesh Foreign Service Association, BCS Taxation Association, Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IEDB), and EED Diploma Engineers Association.

The private organisations that provided donations are Saif Powertec Limited, Uttara Group, Dhaka Club, BSRM Group, Texcotech, Kashem Trust, Hamdard Foundation, Gaan Bangla, Xiaomi Technologies Bangladesh Pvt Limited, Ispahani Tea Limited, Amin Mohammad Foundation, Olila Glass Industries Ltd, Chattogram Chamber of Commerce, and Bangladesh Jewelry Samity.

Zillul Hakim, MP also donated to the PM’s Relief Fund.

As of Wednesday, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country stands at 1,231.

So far, the virus has claimed 50 lives while 49 people have recovered.
