President Md Abdul Hamid has asked all, irrespective of party affiliation, to work together to ensure sustainable development.

"You have to work together to ensure sustainable national progress besides sustaining local development," he said.

The president was addressing a public gathering at the Muktijoddha Abdul Haque Government Degree College grounds in Mithamoin of Kishoreganj on Friday afternoon, reports BSS.

The head of state, now on a weeklong tour of his native district Kishoreganj, said the country is now witnessing tremendous development and everybody, including elected public representatives, must take the responsibility of making the ongoing development sustainable.

Referring to the incumbent government's extensive development programs, he said that as part of such efforts, many programs have been undertaken to save haor water bodies for the benefit of the people.

"But it is very sorry to see that some opportunists have started building houses next to the under-construction highway connecting to three upazilas in the district. It will be not allowed here," he said.

Noting that the unplanned construction of infrastructure in the haor areas would hamper the overall development of haors, the president said these areas can be tourist destinations in the days to come.

He said: "Many people visit every day in the haor areas. If we can provide facilities for tourists, it will generate employment for us."

The president categorically said he would never allow any projects that might damage haor areas and sought people's heartfelt support to save haors in his absence.

President Hamid urged local elected leaders, MPs, upazila chairmen, and local elites, to treat people which does not cost any money.

"Do not be rude to them at all. Maintain good relations with those who voted for you. Try to stand by their side in their joys and sorrows," said Abdul Hamid, elected MP several times, in advising local leaders.

Nagorik Committee of Mithamoin Upazila organized the meeting. Zila Parishad Chairman Zilliur Rahman, and Public Prosecutor Shah Azizul Haque, also spoke at the program.

Secretaries relevant to the president, and senior local administration officials, were also present.
