11th parliament’s maiden session on Wednesday

The five-year tenure of the 10th parliament expired on Monday. It first convened on January 29, 2014 after the 10th general election held on January 5, 2014

The 11th parliament will go into its first session at 3pm on Wednesday, reports UNB.

On January 9, President Abdul Hamid called the session exercising his constitutional power  of article 72 (1).

At the beginning of the session, speaker and deputy speaker of the House are expected to be elected and sworn in by the president.

During her election campaign in Rangpur, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hinted at re-electing current Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

However, it is still not clear who is going to be elected as the deputy speaker of the House.

The President will first address the session before the MPs get the floor.

The five-year tenure of the 10th parliament expired on Monday. It first convened on January 29, 2014 after the 10th general election held on January 5, 2014.

Awami League won 258 seats this election while the main opposition the Jatiya Party securing 22 seats.

The party has already announced that its Chairman HM Ershad will be the opposition leader in parliament while his brother and party Co-Chairman GM Quader will be the deputy opposition leader.

Although the BNP and its alliance partners contested the election, the party only bagged six seats while its alliance partner Gono Forum got two.

However, the Jatiya Oikya Front MPs have said they will not take the oath of office.

On January 7, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina along with her 46 cabinet members took oath following her party's massive victory in the 11th national election.

Apart from the prime minister, there are 24 ministers, 19 state ministers and three deputy ministers in the new cabinet.

Unlike the previous government, no one out of Awami League was inducted in the cabinet this time.
