Bangladesh to receive 790,000 AstraZeneca Covid vaccine shots from Germany Saturday

German envoy and Health Service Division senior secretary will be present at Dhaka airport to receive the shipment

Bangladesh is set to receive 790,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine from Germany.

A Qatar Airways flight carrying the shipment is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5pm on Saturday, said a Health Ministry press release.

German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Tröster and Health Services Division Senior Secretary Lokman Hossain Miah will be present at the airport to receive the consignment.

Bangladesh currently administers Covid-19 vaccines developed by four companies — AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Sinopharm.

Bangladesh signed a deal with Serum Institute of India for 30 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in November last year.

The Bangladesh government had earlier suspended administering AstraZeneca vaccines due to the Indian government’s ban on vaccine export, before resuming it after ensuring supply from other sources.

Around 33.32 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Of them, some 16.92 million have taken both doses, as DGHS data aggregated till Thursday show.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed 27,510 lives and infected more 1,555,911 million people in Bangladesh.
