She dedicated the award to the people of Bangladesh
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received the Tagore Peace Award 2018 in recognition of her contribution to maintaining regional peace and prosperity.
The Asiatic Society, Kolkata conferred the award on the prime minister at a function at Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi on Saturday.
President of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, Prof Isha Mahammad, handed over the award to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the past, noted world leader Nelson Mandela and eminent economist Amarta Sen, among others, have received the award.
A citation was read out at the function in honour of Sheikh Hasina.
"The Asiatic Society is honored to confer the Tagore Peace Award 2018 to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her contribution towards human understanding and peace," the citation said.
Sheikh Hasina dedicated the award to the people of Bangladesh saying: "It is for the people of Bangladesh because they voted me to power."
At the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sheikh Hasina is now on an official visit to India.
Apart from her official engagements in New Delhi, she was also invited as the chief guest at the India Economic Summit organized by the World Economic Forum on October 3-4.
