US reiterates call for fair, participatory election

The United States has reiterated its call for a free, fair and participatory election on December 30.

New US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller made this call during his maiden meeting with Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque on Monday, according to Foreign Ministry officials.

In response, the Foreign Secretary has told the envoy that all efforts are being made to ensure a free, fair and participatory election, they said.

Both diplomats also spoke about a wide range of bilateral issues between Dhaka and Washington as well as international issues, especially on the Rohingya crisis and the attack in on the vehicle of the former US ambassador to Dhaka, Marcia Bernicat in August. 

The foreign secretary said, the attack on the vehicle of Bernicat during the students’ movement for safer road is under investigation.

The US envoy, who will travel to Cox’s Bazar to visit the Rohingya settlements on Tuesday, was full of appreciation for Bangladesh for hosting so many persecuted Myanmar nationals from Rakhine and assured all assistance in this regard.

The Rohingya issue is one of the priorities of the US government, Miller told the foreign secretary.
