Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his reelection, expressing the hope to work closely with him to further strengthen bilateral relations between Turkey and Bangladesh.

According to a press release published by the foreign affairs ministry, Sheikh Hasina said Turkey’s election is “a testimony to the trust and confidence” entrusted by the Turkish people on Erdogan. “Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you on this happy occasion on my own behalf as well as on behalf of my government and the people of Bangladesh,” she added.

Hasina added that the cultural, social, and religious ties existing between Bangladesh and Turkey form the “fountainhead of friendship and brotherhood lasting for centuries.”

She said: “Let us hope that our two peoples will walk hand in hand towards realizing their full potential and much deserved goals of peace, development, and wellbeing."

She recalled Erdogan's "personal initiative and committed support" to the cause of the Rohingya population of Myanmar who had to flee to Bangladesh to save themselves from atrocities.

She said she admires the role played by the Turkish government and people “to provide succor to the distressed people in many different ways.”

She further said: “We hope that with the support of the international community the displaced Rohingya people would be able to return to their homes in Myanmar in an ensured environment of safety and security soon.”

President Abdul Hamid also expressed his delight on Erdogan’s reelection as Turkey’s president for a new term.

He reiterated the premier’s sentiments and said: “This is a clear demonstration of their confidence in your leadership. I would like to extend my warmest felicitations to you on this grand electoral success.”
