Bangladesh and Tajikistan have agreed to work together to strengthen bilateral relations.
Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Friday called on Tajikistan Foreign Minister Aslov Sirodjidin Muhridinovich to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued on Saturday.
Welcoming Shahriar to the country, Muhridinovich hoped that the visit would reinvigorate the current bilateral relations and facilitate efforts to reach into new avenues and sectors for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
The state minister recollected his last visit to Dushanbe and the interactions between the prime minister and the Tajik president over the vital issue of global water.
Shahriar briefed him about the recent developments and activities of the Bangladesh government.
He also briefed Muhridinovich on measures taken by Bangladesh to provide shelter and food to the forcibly displaced Rohingya from Myanmar’s strife-torn Rakhine state.
The Tajik foreign minister praised efforts of Bangladesh in providing assistance and shelter to the refugees.
Underscoring the need for close contact and understanding between the two countries, especially in international forums, and finding ways to make the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) more efficient and successful, he said there is ample scope for expanding the current relations encompassing more mutually beneficial issues at the bilateral level.
The duo discussed various potential agreements between the two countries, including a joint commission, visa waiver, exchange of information and expertise mainly in the RMG sector, export of Tajik cotton and other agricultural products to Bangladesh, development of pharmaceutical products using Tajik resources, and development of tourism.
Muhridinovich commended the leadership role of Bangladesh in various international forums and urged the continued support of Bangladesh in various efforts of Tajikistan.
Shahriar assured him of Bangladesh’s support to Tajikistan in all regional and global forums, and invited him to participate in the forthcoming OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Dhaka.
Tajik First Deputy Foreign Minister Zohidi Nizomiddin Shamsiddinzoda hosted an official dinner in honour of the Bangladesh state minister.
