The Indo-Bangla Maitree Udyan (Friendship Park) at Chottakhola in Belonia sub-division, Tripura is set to be inaugurated on December 16, the Victory Day of Bangladesh.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar will inaugurate the park, said sources at the state secretariat.
Speaking of the part, eminent Tripura-based journalist Swapan Bhattacharjee said Chottakhola was one of the base camps of Bangladeshi freedom fighters during the Liberation War in 1971.
“Student leader Abdur Rab was in-charge of the camp. During the war, youths willing to participate in the fighting were initially interviewed by Khwaja Ahmed at Ekinpur Youth Training Centre. Subsequently, they were sent to Chottakhola camp for training,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.
The Chottakhola camp was also the base for freedom fighters active in Bangladesh’s Feni district, he added.
“Bodies of the freedom fighters who died in this area were laid to rest in Chottakhola,” Bhattacharjee further said.
The foundation stone of the Maitree Udyan was laid down in November 2010 by former Bangladesh foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni.
