State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has led the Bangladesh delegation at the open-ended “extraordinary meeting” of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Executive Committee in Istanbul, Turkey on Tuesday.
Chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the meeting was attended by ministers and state ministers of OIC member states and Secretary General of OIC Dr Yousef Al Othaimeen.
The meeting took place in the backdrop of the recent escalation in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, in particular the violations committed against the sanctity of Masjid Al-Aqsa.
Bangladesh, as one of the eight members of the OIC Executive Committee, reemphasised the universally accepted “two state solution” in resolving the longstanding crisis in Palestine.
The state minister firmly and clearly conveyed that “the people of Bangladesh and the government lead by the Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina strongly condemn and totally reject the Israeli violations.” He also expressed unflinching solidarity with the Palestinians.
He emphasised as well the importance of creating awareness among people in non-Muslim states in order to protect the Palestinians’ legitimate rights.
In this regard, he called on the Muslim Ummah to present a united voice of all relevant international forums, including the UN Security Council and Unesco, for protecting them, as well as the holy places of Palestine.
He also urged OIC member states to provide all out support, including development and capacity building assistance, to empower the Palestinians, both internally and internationally, so as to enable them to better defend their legitimate rights.
The extraordinary meeting issued a joint communique outlining a list of actions to uphold their responsibilities of international community towards the cause of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif.
The state minister for foreign affairs was accompanied by Ambassador of Bangladesh to Turkey M Allama Siddiki, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs AFM Gousal Azam Sarker, Consul General of Bangladesh to Istanbul Mohammad Monirul Islam and other senior officials.
