Swedish FM to act against RAB’s abuse of human rights via EU
Criticising RAB, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström said Bangladesh must take responsibility for putting an end to the abuses in the country. Her reaction came on Tuesday after Radio Sweden released an exclusive report, claiming it had evidence of RAB’s atrocities. “There is only one thing to say – it is horrible and must end immediately. Unfortunately, it confirms the picture of conditions in the country as expressed by various human rights organisations,” the radio’s online version quoted her as saying.

The report is based on a conversation with a high-ranking Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officer who exposed details about how the elite force abducts and kills targets and the violent methods they use, unaware that he was being recorded. Wallström also urged the Swedish Speaker of Parliament Urban Ahlin, who is currently visiting Bangladesh, to express Sweden’s stance in bilateral talks. “We will also act through the EU,” she added.
