Socio-cultural organizations arranged various programs to observe the day
The 56th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was celebrated on Friday.
Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.
On August 15, 1975, he was brutally killed along with most of his family members —including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman— when he was just a student of class four of University Laboratory School.
To mark the day, Awami League leaders placed floral wreath on the graves of all martyrs of 15 August carnage, including that of Sheikh Russel, at Banani graveyard around 8am on Friday.
The party members also recited fateha, and arranged prayers for them.
Different socio-cultural organizations including the associate bodies of the ruling Awami League also arranged various programs to observe the day.
Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader requested the party leaders, activists, well-wishers, supporters and people from all spheres of life to observe the birthday of Sheikh Russel in a befitting manner.
