The pollution has taken its toll on aquatic biodiversity and ecological balance, says a DoE official
The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a leading bakery Tk10 lakh in Chittagong for dumping untreated toxic liquid waste in a canal.
DoE Director (Chittagong region), Moazzam Hossain, slapped the fine on Fulkoli Bread and Biscuits Industries Ltd on Wednesday.
The bakery was discharging untreated liquid waste into a nearby canal through a bypass line, Muktadir Hasan, assistant director of DoE (Chittagong region), told the Dhaka Tribune.
"The untreated toxic waste released from the bakery has polluted the canal water,” he said.
He added that the pollution has taken its toll on the aquatic biodiversity and ecological balance of the canal,, while the foul smell emanating from the toxic liquid waste was hampering the academic environment of a nearby school.
“We have asked the bakery to install an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) within a month," Muktadir said.
