BELA, 11 other organizations demand steps to limit manufacture, use of plastic wares

Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), along with 11 other organizations,has opposed the unbridled manufacture, marketing, and use of plastic products and polythene packets.

The statement also said the non-biodegradable nature of these products has put the environment of the country at a massive risk. 

Moreover, the government’s attempts to use jute products as a viable replacement is largely ignored, and plastics remain dominant. 

“We demand that the government enforce the laws that are already in place to prevent the manufacture, import, marketing, sales, storage, distribution, and use of polythene packets and ensure the availability of alternatives,” the press release also stated.

BELA also asked the authorities to prevent the uncontrolled manufacture, marketing, and use of plastic products as per law.

The press release was addressed to the secretaries of the ministries of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change; Industries; Health and Family Welfare; Planning; Home Affairs; Commerce; Textiles and Jute; Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives. It was also sent to the director general of the Department of Environment,and Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers & Exporters Association.

The press release was signed by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), Dhaka; Environment and Social Development Organization (Esdo), Dhaka; Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba); Youth Environment Society (Youth), Cox’s Bazar; Save the Coastal Peoples (Scope), Barisal; Reach to Unreach (RUN), Barisal; Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (Beds), Khulna; Initiative for Right View (IRV), Khulna; Association for Community Development (ACD), Rajshahi; Self Help and Advanced Development Organization (Shado), Rangpur; Institute of Development Affairs (IDEA), Sylhet; and Sheba Foundation, Mymensingh.
