Grameenphone begins mobile recycling initiative
To mark the occasion of World Environment Day, mobile operator Grameenphone has begun a phone recycling campaign, Telecompaper reported on Wednesday. As per the initiative, drop boxes have been placed outside of Grameenphone centres across the country. The telecommunications service provider has invited anyone that wishes to rid themselves of an unused mobile handset to discard them in these boxes. Grameenphone will then then examine these discarded phones for any reusable or recyclable materials, while also ensuring that any hazardous or toxic materials are disposed of properly. The process of recycling the phones will be conducted both in Bangladesh and abroad, in accordance with ISO 14000, OSHAS 18000, and R2 standards, the Telecompaper report said. Grameenphone centres and circle offices around the country will be available to receive discarded phones all year round. World Environment Day took place on Monday, June 5.
