The Department of Environment on Sunday fined six organisations including two superstores in Mirpur area of Dhaka for using polythene bags.
A mobile court, led by DoE Executive Magistrate Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, fined them a total of Tk270,000 and seized 127kg illegal polythene bags from their possessions, says a press release issued by the environmental regulator.
The magistrate imposed a fine of Tk50,000 each to two outlets of Shwapno superstore; Tk40,000 to Prince Bazar; Tk50,000 to Talukder Bread and Biscuit; and Tk20,000 each to Krishibid Bazar, Fulkuri Food Products and Uzzal Departmental Store.
The mobile court also fined one Iqbal Hossain Tk20,000 for using the banned bags.
The government banned production and use of polythene bags of less than 55 micron thickness in 2002 considering its adverse effects on the environment, and has since been promoting the use of cotton and jute bags as alternatives.
