Indian expert team to rescue the stray elephant due tomorrow

A three-member Indian expert team is coming to Dhaka on Wednesday to rescue and bring back the strayed elephant, which entered Bangladesh with flood water through the Rowmari border on June 27. “The Indian team will arrive in Dhaka on Wednesday and along with Bangladesh forest department officials the team, on Thursday, will visit the place where the elephant is currently roaming,” said Shahab Uddin, deputy conservator of Bangladesh Forest Department on Tuesday. The team will decide the strategy for rescuing her after visiting the site and observing the situation, he said adding that “the decision would be very tough as there is no dry land where she is currently straying”. The team consists of retired conservator of forests of Assam Rithesh Bhattacharjee, Divisional Forest Officer (Goalpara) Assam Chowdhuri Solmon Uddin and veterinary science professor Swarma Khushal Konowar. Currently, the elephant is roaming at Satpoa area at Sarishabari upazila at Jamalpur district. In its journey from Rowmari to Kazipur, it has been spotted in different chars of five districts – Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj in the last one month. Earlier, the Bangladesh government asked the Indian government to rescue the elephant and take it home.
