Elections to 161 UPs, 9 municipalities Monday

The elections were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Elections to 161 union parishads (UP) in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Noakhali, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar and nine municipalities in the country, which were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held on Monday.

The nine municipalities are Bhanga in Faridpur, Nangalkot in Comilla, Chakaria and Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar, Sonagazi in Feni, Kabirhat in Noakhali, Nawapara in Jessore, Debiganj in Panchagarh and Boalkhali in Chittagong.

The voting will begin at 8am and it will continue till 4pm without any break.

Debiganj to hold its first election

All preparations have been completed to arrange polls in a peaceful manner in Debiganj municipality, under Panchgarh district, as its first municipality elections.

A total of 85 candidates are contesting the polls, including Nine mayoral candidates, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Prottoy Hasan, who is also the assistant returning officer.

Giasuddin Chowdhury from Awami League, Mofakkarul Islam and Faridul Islam from BNP and six other independent candidates are racing for mayor post.

Nine magistrates, two platoons of BGB and RAB, members of the police and Ansar were deployed for holding free and fair elections, UNO said.

The total number of eligible voters is 10,914 in the municipality. Of them, 5,336 are male and 5,578 are female.
