The BNP nominated mayoral candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain claims that there were massive irregularities during the polls

BNP-nominated mayoral candidate and BNP’s Chittagong chapter convener Dr Shahadat Hossain demanded  Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) re-election, claiming there were massive irregularities.

Shahadat made the demand while addressing a post-poll press conference at the party’s Nasiman Bhaban office on Sunday.

Shahadat also announced that he would be taking initiatives to sue the election commission for the anomalies in the CCC polls held on January 27.

“I visited 60 booths in 15 polling centres from 9 am till 2 pm on election day. I saw that the voter’s presence was not more than 6% till 2 pm. However, 22.49% of the vote is said to be cast at the just-concluded polls. The vote count through EVM should take two to three hours. It is a mystery as to why the vote count through the EVM took 10 hours,” he said.

“84% and 1.66% of the votes were shown to be cast at the two polling centres housed in the same building. The lowest vote was cast at Halishahar Ahmad Mia City Corporation Girls High School. Only 42 votes were cast against 2365 votes in the polling centre. Abnormally high vote casting was shown at the Dakshin Halishahar and Rampur wards. 93.82% of votes were cast against 3108 voters at Dakshin Halishahar Ehsanul Ulum Arabia Madrasa centre,” he added.

Shahadat said: “According to the EC, I received 52,489 votes in 733 polling centres. Of the 52,489 votes, less than 10 votes were cast for BNP in 187 centres. Zero votes were cast for BNP at the Sholoshahar Forest Research Institute and Naziria Naimia Mahmudia Fazil Madrasa polling centres.15 votes were cast in my polling centre.”

“January 27 will be remembered as a scandalous chapter in the electoral history of the country. As part of a blueprint, fabricated cases against BNP men happen ahead of the polls. The BNP-backed councilors were intimidated to not leave their areas ahead of the polls. A reign of terror was established to ensure the win of the ruling party candidates. We demanded the recovery of illegal arms and requested they be submitted ahead of the polls, but in vain,” he concluded.
