The Election Commission says it has taken all the necessary steps to hold the polls peacefully
The fifth, and final, phase of the upazila parishad (UP) elections has ended in 23 upazilas in several districts of Bangladesh.
The balloting began around 9am on Tuesday, and continued till 4pm, uninterrupted.
The 23 upazilas include: Nakla in Sherpur district, Naldanga in Natore, Kamarkhand in Sirajganj, Sundarganj in Gaibandha, Rangabali in Patuakhali, Taltali in Barguna, Gazipur Sadar, Narayanganj Bandar, Madaripur Sadar, Kalukhali in Rajbari, Shaistaganj in Habiganj, Bancharampur and Bijoynagar in Brahmanbaria, Comilla Adarsha Sadar, Comilla Sadar Dakkhin, Noakhali Sadar, Pabna Sadar, Purbadhala in Netrakona, Jamalganj Sadar, Katiadi in Kishoreganj, Mathbaria in Pirojpur, and Chhagalnaiya in Feni.
Elections for 463 upazila parishads in the country's 491 upazilas were held in the first four phases on March: 10, 18, 24, and 31.
The Election Commission says it has taken all the necessary steps to hold the elections in a peaceful manner.
The government has declared Tuesday a general holiday – in the 23 upazilas.
