Brahmanbaria man killed in post-polls clash

A man has been killed in an incident of post-election violence in Boroichora village of Sarail upazila in Brahmanbaria.

The fourth phase of the upazila polls was held in Sarail on March 31.

The deceased has been identified as Rukon Uddin.

Sarail police station Officer-in-Charge Mofiz Uddin Bhuiyan confirmed the matter and said: “We are expecting more violent incidents like this. We have tightened security around the area.”

Witnesses said, on Thursday morning, Ahsan Ullah, a supporter of newly-elected Rafique Uddin Thakur got into a verbal fight with Faruk Mia, a supporter of Shafiqur Rahman, a defeated candidate.

The deceased, Rukon Uddin, was an associate of Faruk Mia. He was attacked in relation to the dispute between the two groups regarding the polls, according to locals.

An injured Rukon Uddin was brought to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital around 10am Thursday, where the doctor on duty, Syed Ariful Islam, declared him dead.
