Mathbaria polls violence: Case filed against 65, including AL president, for Jony’s murder

In the upazila parishad elections violence of Pirojpur, a case has been filed against 65 people, including the Mathbaria upazila Awami League president , in connection with the murder of Jony Talukdar, vice-president of Holta Gulishakhali union unit of the Swechhasebak League.

Jony's uncle, Md Swapan Talukdar, filed a case with Mathbaria police station on Monday night, against 35 people and 30 other unnamed persons, including Municipality Mayor and Mothbaria upazila Awami League President, Rafiuddin Ahmed Ferdous, upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary and Tikikata union parishad Chairman, Rafiqul Islam Ripon Jamaddar, and Bara Machua union parishad Chairperson, Nasir Uddin Hawladar.

He said two people, Jahangir Hossain Talukder and Hanif Hawladar, were arrested in the case.

According to OC Shawkat, on Monday around 9am, rivals attacked Jony near a waterbody in Kabutarkhali.

They hacked Jony with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.

On information, police rescued Jony and rushed him to the upazila health complex.

He was later shifted to Barisal Shere Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died at about 1pm, the OC said.

According to locals, Jony supported independent candidate Riazuddin, which incensed Awami League candidate, Hossain Mosharraf Saku, who may have ordered the attack.
