‘Agitators tried to spread panic among the people through acts of vandalism and riots in different parts of the upazila’
Police have on Tuesday arrested 30 individuals over instigating violence and riots following the Upazila Parishad Elections in the Sreepur upazila in Gazipur.
SM Sohel Rana, the district correspondent of a private TV channel MyTV, came under attack while he was taking photographs of the disturbances.
The victim’s brother Amanullah Farazi said: “Near the Mawna Chowrasta road, a group of men in 10-15 motorcycles attacked Sohel with wooden sticks, during which his associates also came under attack.”
“Attackers also snatched his phone with which he captured images of the disturbances.”
He was later rescued by his associates and family members and taken to the Al Hera Hospital and later transferred to the Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital.
Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector Azaharul Islam said: “Agitators tried to create panic among the people through acts of vandalism and riots in different parts of the upazila.
“They were led by Gazipur Chhatra League former joint convener Fahim Kandakar and Sreepur Jubo League activist Ashraful Alam Wasif,” he added.
Sreepur police station OC Jabedul Islam told reporters that: “Police in this connection filed a case and arrested 30 individuals including the main accused Fahim Khandakar’s brother Nayeem Khandaker.”
