Dhaka University Teachers' Association met with the protesting students around 11pm Friday
Students of Dhaka University (DU) have broken their hunger strike upon assurance of talks from university authorities.
Students broke the fast by drinking water and milkshake after university authorities heard their demands around 11:30pm on Friday, the fourth day of the strike.
Following the Dhaka University Central Students Union (Ducsu) elections on Monday, several students went on the hunger strike from Tuesday, demanding re-election and resignation of people involved in conducting the polls.
Mass allegations of irregularities and vote rigging were raised by general students and candidates of all student fronts except the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Five students began the strike on Tuesday. Later another student also joined the strike. Several protesting students fell sick on Friday and were treated at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
After four days into the strike, members of Dhaka University Teachers' Association met the protesting students around 11pm Friday.
Dhaka University Teachers' Association President Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said: "If you want, university authorities will sit with you on Monday. We will listen to the allegations and in future we will try to make the electoral process more transparent."
Pro Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Muhammad Samad, Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani and Ducsu- VP-elect Nurul Haque Nur, GS-elect Golam Rabbani and AGS-elect Md Saddam Hussain were also present at the time.
