The first phase of the upazila parishad election is scheduled to be held on March 10 while the second phase will be held on March 18
Indicating BNP’s absence in the upcoming upazila polls, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said the election has lost its glamour
“The preparation process for the upazila polls was not satisfactory as a number of political parties have decided not to participate in it,” he said at a briefing session with the upazila Returning Officers at the Election Commission secretariat at Dhaka’s Agargaon on Tuesday.
He also stressed that the upazila elections must be held despite partial participation “to uphold democracy.”
Present scenario indicates that most of the candidates vying for the chairman posts will become elected without competition as they are unopposed, he added.
“Although the election lost its credibility without proper participation from all political parties, still the polls needs to be held in free, fair and neutral manner,” he added.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of the upazila election as it’s an important element of democracy, which aims to uphold the constitution and the electoral code of conduct.
