The ruling party candidate is the sister of former Awami League general secretary late Syed Ashraful Islam
Awami League candidate Dr Syeda Zakia Nur Lipi has been elected uncontested as MP of Kishoreganj 1 constituency.
Returning Officer Md Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury, also the district’s deputy commissioner, made the announcement at his office on Sunday evening.
The re-election to this seat was scheduled for February 28.
But Lipi was announced winner from the seat after two other candidates — Jatiya Party’s Mostaeen Billah and Ganatantri Party’s Bhupendra Chandra Bhowmik Dolon — withdrew from the race, Sarwar told the Dhaka Tribune.
The deadline to withdraw candidacy was on Sunday.
Lipi is the daughter of late Syed Nazrul Islam, who served as the acting president of Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War, and the sister of late Syed Ashraful Islam, who was the public administration minister of the last Awami League cabinet.
The seat fell vacant after former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraf died on January 3 at a hospital in Bangkok.
Even though he was absent before and during the 11th general election, held on December 30, he had emerged as the winner from this constituency. He was also elected MP from the seat in the last four general elections subsequently — in 1996, 2001, 2008 and 2014.
