40 injured in AL infighting

They also vandalized three motorcycles during the clash

At least 40 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the Awami League in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat on Sunday, centering the candidacy of upazila parishad polls.

The clash ensued between supporters of election aspirants Rafiqul Alam and Imrul Kayes Faruque around 11:30am.

Police said upazila Awami League General Secretary Rafiqul Alam got the Awami League nomination for contesting the upcoming upazila parishad election.

As supporters of Rafiqul were preparing a motorcycle rally to receive Rafiqul, who was on his way back home from Dhaka, nomination deprived Imrul's followers obstructed them.

As a result, a chase and counter chase took place in front of the local Awami League office around 11:30am, leaving 40 wounded.

They also vandalized three motorcycles during the clash.

Upon being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by firing off 20 rounds, said Aditmari police station Officer-in-Charge,  Saiful Islam.

Additional police have been deployed in the area.
