2nd phase upazila election on March 18

The polls will be held under party banners

The Election Commission will hold the second phase of the Upazila Parishad Election on March 18.

Similar to the first phase, scheduled for March 10, the polls will be held under party banners.

The commission also decided to dispatch two assistant returning officers to sadar upazilas. 

According to a press release issued by the Election Commission on Thursday, the deadline by which to submit nomination papers is February 18. Returning officers will scrutinize the nomination papers by February 20.

Meanwhile, the deadline for withdrawing one’s candidacy is February 27, and voting will take place on March 18.

Previously, on Sunday, the Election Commission announced that the first phase of the Upazila Parishad Election will be held on March 10.

The first phase will be held in 87 upazilas under 12 districts—under the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Rajshahi divisions—the commission’s Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told a press briefing.

Announcing the polls schedule, he also said that aspirants will have to submit their nomination forms by February 11.

The forms will be scrutinized on February 12, and after that, candidates will have till February 19 to withdraw from the race, Helal said.

The commission plans to hold the elections of around 480 upazilas, in five phases, this year; starting on March 10.

The elections will be the first under the newly-formed Awami League government that came to power through the 11th general election held on December 30 last year.
