The polls are slated for February 28
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has urged the election officials to ensure that the upcoming Dhaka City Corporation polls are as fair as the national polls.
He made the statement, on Tuesday, while briefing the returning officers and executive magistrates for the Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral by-polls plus Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporation polls.
The polls are slated for February 28.
He said: “Make the city corporation polls as fair as the general polls [held on December 30, 2018]. Use the same expertise and hard work.
“It is not your duty to see who wins the election. Your job is to monitor whether the candidates are maintaining the code of conduct.”
The chief election commissioner furthered: “The councillors are so competitive that they sometimes break the law.”
He added that the candidates are bound to listen to the magistrates if they exercise their judicial power.
“During the general polls, I saw that the candidates did not protest when a junior magistrate fined them. They also pledged not to repeat their mistakes.”
He urged election officials to carry out their duties as per the law.
