725 nomination seekers have submitted their nomination forms already

A total of 1383 female MP aspirants have collected nomination forms from the Awami League, for reserved seats in the 11th parliament, in the last three days.

Awami League Deputy Office Secretary Biplob Barua on Wednesday said already 725 nomination seekers have submitted their nomination forms.

The ruling Awami League started selling its nomination forms for the reserved women seats in parliament, from Tuesday morning with a Tk30,000 deposit for each form, from the party president's political office in Dhanmondi around 10am. The sale will continue till January 18 (Friday).

The Election Commission will announce the election schedule for the 50 reserved women seats of 11th parliamentary sessions on February 11.

To meet the requirements for proportional representation in House, Awami League will get 43 reserved seats; Jatiya Party will get four and BNP one seat, while other parties and the coalition of independent MPs will get the remaining two seats.

Female nomination aspirants for the reserved seats were seen waiting outside the Awami League Dhanmondi from early Tuesday.

A gazette notification about the MPs elected in the 299 constituencies of the 11th parliament was published on January 1. 

The Election Commission has a legal obligation to arrange elections for the 50 reserved seats for women within 90 days after publication of the gazette of the general election results.

Directly-elected members of the parliament will vote and select the reserved seat MPs.

If the number of political party nominated candidates are equal to the reserved seats, then the contenders will be declared elected unopposed immediately, after the last date for withdrawal of the candidacy.
