Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has been named the leader of the 11th parliament.

The new MPs of Awami League re-elected Hasina as leader of the House for the third consecutive term at the maiden meeting of Awami League’s Parliamentary Committee, after taking their oath at the National Parliament on Thursday.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and Advisory Council member Tofail Ahmed confirmed the matter while addressing reporters after the meeting.

However, the deputy leader of the House is yet to be chosen, reports UNB.

Quader proposed that Shiekh Hasina be elected as leader of the House and all Awami League lawmakers supported the proposal, unanimously.

Tofail said Sheikh Hasina is going to be the prime minister for the fourth time as she is an internationally renowned politician and the leader of the people of Bangladesh.

"With this, Bangladesh is going to enter a golden age for the next five years," he added.

Tofail also said the general people recognized Sheikh Hasina as their leader by casting their votes for the boat symbol, the electoral symbol of Awami League, on December 30, just as they had attained independence by voting for boat in 1970.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the Awami League president at the meeting asked everyone to work in unison to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people.

“With the party’s landslide victory, the responsibility of the party’s leaders and workers, and expectations of the people are massive, so the leaders and workers will have to show that they deserve public confidence,” Quader quoted the premier as saying.

The Awami League president also directed everyone to work together to fulfil the electoral pledges of the party and strengthen the grassroots, he added.

“The prime minister said the opposition may go for a legal battle or a type of movement, and asked everyone to be ready to face such a situation,” Quader told reporters.

Replying to a question about Jatiya Oikya Front MPs joining parliament, the Awami League general secretary said: “It is their own decision. We have nothing to do with it, but I think they should honour the people’s verdict,” reports BSS

The Awami League-led Grand Alliance won the 11th general elections by a landslide on Sunday, December 30, securing 288 parliamentary seats out 298.
